Ratio works on painless drug administration device

9/25/2007

MADISON, Wis. Ratio, a small biotechnology company is working on a product that would give patients a painless way to administer drugs, according to the Wisconsin State Journal.

The product is a disposable, adhesive drug delivery pump worn on the skin. It’s about the size of a poker chip and uses water and a gel–a hydrogel–that expands and presses on the drug in the device, which is then injected through micro needles.

The device is being aimed for use by hemophiliacs, when they begin to bleed. The device would inject a clotting factor that would save these people trips to the hospital.

The company believes it can produce the devices for $1 each and would be a breakthrough once approved by the Food and Drug Administration. The company is seeking $750,000 for further development.
