Manulife announced that it will be partnering with Shoppers Drug Mart in a big way.

The Toronto-based company announced that it would be launching a medical marijuana program in Canada in collaboration with the retailer.

Available as an option for participating Group Benefits plans and individual health insurance plans within Canada, Shoppers Drug Mart’s specially trained pharmacists at an Ontario-based patient care center will support Manulife’s customers who have been approved for this coverage.

“Shoppers Drug Mart’s trusted healthcare professionals can provide patients with greater attention and support to navigate the complexities of medical cannabis therapies,” said Mark Rolnick, vice president of employer health solutions at Shoppers Drug Mart. “We are excited about this new partnership and its ability to help Manulife customers live their lives well.”

The pharmacists will advise patients on the different strands of marijuana available and the different ways to take it.

“Medical marijuana can be complex. Most medically-authorized patients need help finding the right solution for their condition,” said Donna Carbell, senior vice president of group benefits. “Manulife’s medical marijuana program will ensure people have appropriate advice, make informed decisions and receive the support they need to choose the appropriate strain for their condition.”

Further information on the program will be available when it goes live, the company said.
