Winn-Dixie announces community donation program

Winn-Dixie announced a community donation program that will benefit the Ochsner Hospital for Children and is part of the chain's expanded role as sponsor of the 2019 King Cake Festival.

The retailer, which is part of the Southeastern Grocers portfolio, will activate the program in Louisiana from Feb. 13 to March 5. Winn-Dixie will invite consumers in the area to make donations at the register to support the children's hospital.

In addition, the company will donate a percentage of its king cake sales throughout the Mardi Gras season to Ochsner, with each of the dollars being raised used to support programs within the hospital.

“We are truly excited to take this next step in our partnership with Ochsner Hospital for Children as we continue to deepen our roots and further solidify our enduring commitment to communities across Louisiana,” Anthony Hucker, president and CEO of Southeastern Grocers, said. “Winn-Dixie has a strong history in Louisiana, and we're proud to be rooted in this region for more than 60 years. We're always looking for ways we can improve the health and happiness of our local communities, which is why we are passionate about supporting Ochsner and other organizations that share our compassion for the people we serve.”

Winn-Dixie also will grant a Mardi Gras wish to a young patient at the hospital, and host the patient as a special guest on its float for the Krewe of Argus parade, the company said.

“The Ochsner Hospital for Children family is so grateful that New Orleans has embraced King Cake Festival and its cause,” Thomas Harris Jr., FACHE, vice president of pediatrics at Ochsner Hospital for Children, said. “The generosity of our sponsors, including Winn-Dixie, and attendees touches the lives of so many in our community by helping us provide the quality health care our kids need and deserve.”
