Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare was shot and killed in Manhattan on Dec. 4, according to CNN.
The attack appears to be targeted, as Thompson was headed toward the New York Hilton Hotel in Midtown to attend the company’s annual investor conference.
According to the news outlet, the gunman waited for Thompson to arrive before opening fire and taking multiple shots from a distance.
Following the attack, Thompson was taken to Mount Sinai West where he was pronounced dead.
UnitedHealthcare did not proceed with its conference.

United Healthcare has released the following statement: “We are deeply saddened and shocked at the passing of our dear friend and colleague Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare. Brian was a highly respected colleague and friend to all who worked with him. We are working closely with the New York Police Department and ask for your patience and understanding during this difficult time. Our hearts go out to Brian’s family and all who were close to him.”
Thompson's wife, Paulette Thompson, told NBC News "there were some people that had been threatening him.”
