Zydus Cadila obtains FDA OK for generic Cytomel

Patients with underactive thyroid will soon have a new generic treatment.

The Food and Drug Administration has cleared Zydus Cadila’s liothyronine sodium tablets in dosage strengths of 5 mcg, 25 mcg, and 50 mcg.

The product is the generic of Pfizer’s Cytomel tablets.

Liothyronine is a man-made form of thyroid hormone which is used to treat an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism). It replaces or provides more thyroid hormone, which is normally made by the thyroid gland.

The drug will be manufactured at the group’s formulation manufacturing facility at the SEZ, Ahmedabad.
