  • Walgreens joins Magic Johnson Foundation on Point Forward Day

    LOS ANGELES — The Magic Johnson Foundation on Monday initiated Point Forward Day, marking 20 years to the date that Johnson announced his HIV status and subsequent retirement from the National Basketball Association.

    In partnership with AIDS Healthcare Foundation, MJF will host free confidential testing events at retailers, including Walgreens in Chicago.  At select locations, testing will include participation from government officials, dignitaries and athletes who will lead their communities by getting tested first at on site mobile units.

  • Sam's Club salutes military members with new membership offering

    BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Members of the military can enjoy savings at Sam's Club with the introduction of a new membership offering.

    The retailer said that when military personnel — including those active or retired, their spouses and civilian military employees — join or renew as an advantage member or advantage plus member, the company will provide them with a $15 Sam's Club gift card to each primary membership.

    Proof of military identification is required and the offer cannot be combined with any other membership offers, Sam's Club noted.

    MOUNT ARLINGTON, N.J. — Mars Retail Group is introducing M&M's gifts in time for the holidays.

    The lineup for the 2011 holiday season includes such products as:

    • Nine holiday-themed inflatable yard decorations developed by MRG and Gemmy Industries Corp., which carry a suggested retail price range from $29.99 to $79.99;

    • Shakerz, also developed by MRG and Gemmy Industries Corp., are animated M&M's characters that shake and play holiday music carry a suggested retail price of $9.99;

    SUPPLIER NEWS — Unilever has agreed to acquire Russian beauty company Concern Kalina, which significantly will strengthen its foothold in skin care and hair care in Russia. Unilever initially is acquiring 82% of Concern Kalina for approximately €390 million (U.S. $537 million). The acquisition is subject to regulatory approvals and is expected to be completed by the end of 2011.
