BRUSSELS, Belgium — Beer brewer Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev) announced Thursday that it had approached the board of beer and soft drink maker SABMiller about a potential merger.
There had been speculation earlier this week that AB InBev, which controls brands like Budweiser, Corona and Stella Artois, had designs on approaching SAB Miller, to the point that the latter company issued a statement urging shareholders to retain their shares in the absence of a formal offer.
“AB InBev's intention is to work with SABMiller's Board toward a recommended transaction,” AB InBev said in a statement. “There can be no certainty that this approach will result in an offer or agreement, or as to the terms of any such agreement.”
Among SABMiller’s beer brands are Coors, Blue Moon and Miller, among various other American and international varieties.
