New study finds pomegranate juice most effective in fighting free radicals

LOS ANGELES A study conducted by the University of California Los Angeles found that pomegranate juice had a larger amount of phenolic content and antioxidant activity than red wine, blueberry juice, orange juice and Concord grape.

The study was published in the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry, and led by David Herbner of the David Geffen School of Medicine at the university. According to the study, the antioxidant potency composite index of pomegranate juice was about 20 percent greater than any other beverage included in the study.

The study included beverages like acai juice and white and green teas, as well. According to the study, the juice is found to be most effective in fighting free radicals, which can cause cancer, protection of cholesterol from oxidation, and has the highest polyphenol content when compared to other juices.
