Reports: Kroger, Walmart looking to buy Hostess assets

12/14/2012

NEW YORK — Kroger and Walmart may be looking to buy up assets from bankrupt food company Hostess Brands, according to published reports.

Citing a person familiar with the matter, Bloomberg reported Friday that the two retail chains were looking to buy some of the assets of Hostess, the maker of brands like Wonder bread, Twinkies and others. Hostess announced last month that it would shut down and sell its assets amid a union strike that the company said had forced it to halt operations and the inability of the company and workers from the Bakery, Confectionary, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union to reach a deal.

Bloomberg reported that Grupo Bimbo and Alpha Baking Co. were also among the bidders.
