H-E-B is adding a pharmacy resource for its patients who want to dispose of unused and unwanted medication at home. The San Antonio-based retailer now is offering DisposeRx at of its pharmacy locations throughout Texas.

DisposeRx is a non-toxic solution to help dispose of unused or expired medications. Users can mix water and the DisposeRx powder with the medication in the pill vial to isolate the medicine in a polymer gel, allowing them to dispose of the vial in the household trash. The product will be available to H-E-B patients upon requests, and pharmacists will be able to counsel patients about how to properly use DisposeRx.

"At H-E-B, the health and safety of our customers is a top priority," said Craig Norman, senior vice president of H-E-B Pharmacy. "As we see a rise in opioid abuse and other prescription drug misuse in communities across the nation, it's important that we offer our customers, at no cost, a safe, effective, easy-to-use disposal option they can use at home."

H-E-B noted that its other efforts around medication disposal and curbing medication abuse include participation in the Drug Enforcement Administration’s prescription drug take-back events, pharmacist education regarding medications and potential for prescription drug abuse, and stocking naloxone as an option for patients at risk of experience opioid-related issues.

"We are thrilled that H-E-B has added DisposeRx packets to the list of quality products offered at their pharmacy counters," said William Simpson, president of DisposeRx. "Now supplied with an effective drug disposal solution and patient education, H-E-B pharmacists can talk with customers about the importance of disposing of unused medications in a timely and appropriate way."
