  • Nestle Aguas Frescas inspired by Hispanic culture

    GLENDALE, Calif. — Nestle USA is looking to reach Hispanic consumers with new ready-to-drink beverages.

    Nestle Aguas Frescas include Jamaica and Horchata flavors. Nestle Aguas Frescas Jamaica is made from hibiscus flowers and Tamarindo — made from tamarind puree — making it an excellent source of vitamin C. The Nestle Aguas Frescas Horchata beverage is made from rice and cinnamon, and is an excellent source of calcium, Nestle USA said.

    The drinks are hitting store shelves this summer.

  • Kashi introduces TLC peanutty dark chocolate layered granola bars

    LA JOLLA, Calif. — Kashi has introduced a decadent addition to its TLC layered granola bars line.

    The new peanutty dark chocolate flavor, which joins dark chocolate coconut and pumpkin pecan TLC layered granola bars, features Kashi's signature seven whole grains blend, as well as 4.5 g of fiber and 4 g of protein in each bar.

    Kashi's TLC peanutty dark chocolate layered granola bars now are available at grocers and natural food retailers nationwide for a suggested retail price of $3.89.

  • Teva's generic Aricept OKed by FDA

    JERUSALEM — The Food and Drug Administration has approved a generic drug for Alzheimer’s disease made by Teva Pharmaceutical Industries.

    The FDA approved Teva’s donepezil hydrochloride tablets in the 5-mg and 10-mg strengths.

    The drug is a generic version of Aricept, made by Pfizer and Eisai. Branded and generic versions of the drug had sales of about $2.3 billion during the 12-month period ended in March, according to IMS Health.

  • Mylan gets go-ahead for generic Effexor XR

    PITTSBURGH — The Food and Drug Administration has approved a generic drug for depression and anxiety made by Mylan, the drug maker said Thursday.

    Mylan announced the approval of venlafaxine hydrochloride extended-release capsules in the 37.5-mg, 75-mg and 150-mg strengths.

    The drug, used to treat major depressive disorder and social anxiety disorder, is a generic version of Effexor XR, made by Wyeth. Mylan is launching the drug under a licensing agreement it made with Wyeth before its purchase by Pfizer.

  • New frozen treats from Breyers, Popsicle, Klondike enter market

    ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS, N.J. — A new set of sweet treats from Unilever brands Breyers, Popsicle and Klondike is making its way to the frozen food aisle this summer.

    The Breyers Blasts! line now includes eight new varieties that each feature candy and cookie brands, such as Mrs. Fields and Whoppers. The flavors are available for a suggested retail price from $3.50 to $4.99.

  • Tom's of Maine Simply White toothpaste earns ADA's Seal of Acceptance

    KENNEBUNK, Maine — Tom's of Maine has announced the launch of its new natural Simply White fluoride toothpaste, which contains no bleaching agents or artificial flavors.

    Simply White has earned the American Dental Association Seal of Acceptance, a first for any natural whitening toothpaste, according to the manufacturer.

    Simply White toothpaste combines three naturally sourced silicas that combine to remove surface stains. Simply White, like all Tom's of Maine products, has no artificial preservatives, animal ingredients or animal testing.

  • Nathan's Famous beefs up hot dog offering

    CHICAGO — Nathan's Famous has introduced Angus beef hot dogs for the grilling season.

    "Consumers love Angus beef, and now they can choose Nathan's Famous hot dogs made from all Angus beef, too," said Janet Sweeney, marketing director for Specialty Foods Group, which handles retail sales for Nathan's Famous hot dogs. "It's all about giving consumers the choices they want as we kick off the grilling season."

  • Dr. Sears Family Essentials introduces new Popumz flavors

    IRVINE, Calif. — A line of popped whole grain crisps has expanded to include three new varieties.

    Dr. Sears Family Essentials' Popumz now includes barbecue, ranch and cheddar varieties. The all-natural crisps are packed with protein, fiber and omega-3 DHA, the company said. The new flavors join the current lineup of sweet Popumz flavors of chocolate, vanilla and caramel.

    The new Popumz crisps will retail for $3.99 per box of five 0.75-oz., single-serve bags.
