NCPA's 2022 Annual Convention announces keynote speakers

    conference teaser

With the National Community Pharmacists Association’s 2022 Annual Convention approaching, the organization is highlighting some of the speakers who will address attendees of the in-person event taking place Oct. 1 to 4 in Kansas City, Mo.

With the theme of the convention, “Team Up! Where Teamwork Makes It All Work,” NCPA shared that Mike Abrashoff, former commander of the USS Benfold and author of three books, is scheduled to speak during the first general session on Oct. 2.

Abrashoff was the most-junior officer in the Pacific Fleet when he took command of the near-worst performing ship. Twelve months later, the USS Benfold was the best ship in the entire Navy, using the same crew. The story of that stunning transformation has lessons for every organization: leadership matters and culture is everything. He offers clear, battle-tested and actionable steps, and shows people at every level of an organization how to engage and take incremental steps that can make a dramatic difference.

“I didn’t turn the ship around — my crew did that,” he said. “What I did was to create an environment where they felt safe, empowered and supported. When you do that, anything is possible.”

Will Flanary is scheduled to speak during the second general session on Oct. 3. Flanary is an ophthalmologist and comedian, who moonlights in his free time as “Dr. Glaucomflecken” on social media to an audience of over 2.5 million.

Effortlessly blending observational medical humor with biting satire, he has spent years entertaining healthcare professionals on a variety of topics, including the horrors of health insurance. He has a passion for bringing humor to health care and is a frequent keynote speaker to audiences across all of medicine. One of his latest bits skewers massive pharmacy benefit managers, the healthcare middlemen often condemned by independent pharmacists and many others.

    Herstat GST makes its debut

    herstat teaser

Genital herpes is common in the United States.

The most recent Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates show there were 572,000 new genital herpes infections in the United States during the year 2018. Comparatively 1-in-6 American women between the ages of 14 years old and 49 years old are said to carry the HSV-2 virus, which causes genital sores, and 1-in-12 men in the same age group, according to Herstat, makers of a new OTC genital sore treatment.

The Jackson, Wyo.-based company said that despite it being a common condition, genital herpes sufferers are often subjected to the negative and unwarranted social stigma of the ailment, which is precisely why the packaging for GST has been thoughtfully designed with the consumer’s natural desire to shop in-store with privacy in mind.

We know from our extensive global experience within the herpes space that genital herpes sufferers will regularly reach for topical cold sore products, which they will use alongside taking oral prescription meds, the company said. With this in mind, we suggest that Herstat GST sits as comfortably within the personal care/feminine care section as it does adjacent to existing Herstat products in the cold sore assortment.

For sufferers of cold sores (HSV-1) and genital sores (HSV-2), the Herstat brand is increasingly becoming synonymous with products that provide both fast acting relief and highly efficacious treatment for their unwanted symptoms, the company said.

The product will be available to retail pharmacies and mass retail Oct. 1.
