GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — SpartanNash has announced two executive promotions, including a former Walgreens executive who previously served as EVP, food distribution at SpartanNash and will now serve as president, wholesale and distribution operations.
Derek Jones, SpartanNash’s EVP, food distribution, has been promoted to president, wholesale and distribution operations. He will oversee the entire supply chain, including military supply chain operations.
Jones joined the company in 2006 from Unisource Worldwide, where he served as VP of distribution for the company’s eastern region covering 35 states, 48 distributions centers and $3 billion in annual delivery sales. Jones also has held senior operations management positions with Office Depot, Walgreens and Wal-Mart.
In addition, Dave Staples, SpartanNash’s current EVP and CFO, has been appointed COO. Jones will report to Staples.
As COO, Staples will oversee all three operating segments of the company: retail, wholesale and military distribution. The company has initiated recruiting efforts for a CFO; Staples will continue to serve as CFO until his replacement is hired.
Staples joined SpartanNash in January 2000, serving as the company’s EVP and CFO since November of 2000. In this capacity, Staples directed finance, real estate, the treasurer’s department, internal audit, risk management and information technology. Prior to joining SpartanNash, Staples held positions with Kmart and Arthur Andersen.
