Walgreens rolls out summer sun protection programs

6/20/2019
Walgreens is looking to raise awareness of skin health this summer. The chain has begun rolling out a series of programs meant to educate its customers about skin cancer risks and the importance of early detection using interactive, community-focused events featuring dermatologists, pharmacists and specially trained beauty consultants.

Walgreens noted that the Skin Cancer Foundation estimates that 1-in-5 Americans will develop skin cancer by the time they are 70 years old. For the second year in a row, Walgreens is working with the Skin Cancer Foundation on the Destination: Healthier Skin program, offering free full-body skin cancer screenings in cities nationwide. It features a customized RV with two private exam rooms where local dermatologists provide free screenings to customers. This year, Walgreens and the Skin Cancer Foundation are adding a high-tech facial image scan to examine sub-surface sun damage using the Canfield Reveal imager system, which reveals the cumulative effects of sun exposure.

“As a leader in healthcare, Walgreens is dedicated to helping our customers take proactive measures to safeguard their health and wellbeing,” said Chet Robson, acting chief medical officer at Walgreens. “Long summer days are meant to be spent outdoors, but we want people to understand that overexposure to the sun can be harmful if proper precautions are not taken. Through our partnership with the Skin Cancer Foundation, we’re able to deliver our expertise to even more people this summer to help them keep their skin healthy.”

Alongside a national ad campaign about skin safety, Walgreens also will host interactive skin care experiences featuring Walgreens beauty consultants in certain markets. The sun care-trained beauty consultants will hand out sunscreen samples, educate visitors about the importance of sun protection and offer sun safety tips. The events will take place in the following markets:

  • San Diego – June 20-21

  • Santa Monica – June 23-24

  • San Francisco – June 29-30

  • Salt Lake City – July 5-6

  • Denver – July 13-14

  • Omaha – July 20-21

  • Chicago – July 24-25

  • Indianapolis – July 27-28

  • Louisville, KY – August 1-2

  • Nashville – August 4-5

Additionally, in Florida, Baptist Health will offer a day of free skin screenings at three of the Baptist Health Clinics they operate inside Walgreens locations in Jacksonville, Ponte Vedra and Orange Park on June 28.
