Wegmans makes donation to Western Fairfax Christian Ministries

Wegmans’ soon-to-open store in Chantilly, Va., delivered 9,001 pounds of non-perishable food to Western Fairfax Christian Ministries and is scheduled to deliver more food in October, the grocer announced on Thursday.

The donation includes 10 pallets of assorted vegetables and fruit, baking needs, snacks, breakfast items and juice that will help stock up the pantry shelves for summer. Thursday’s delivery marked the first of two small truckloads Wegmans is donating. The second delivery, scheduled for October, will bring the total to more than 18,000 pounds of food.

“We know that food pantries build stronger communities,” said Wegmans store manager Brien MacKendrick. “As we head into the summer months, it’s an especially critical time for food insecurity, and it’s our privilege to fill the shelves at WFCM for the first time before we open.”

Wegmans Chantilly is slated to open June 3.

Every year, Wegmans donates more than 14.5 million pounds of food to local food banks, food pantries, and soup kitchens in all the communities it serves. In addition to food donations, all Wegmans stores raised a total of $2.9 million for hunger relief through scanning campaigns in 2017, and since these programs began in 1993, Wegmans has raised more than $35.5 million.
