Bio-Oil debuts second product in 30 years

For the first time in more than 30 years, Bio-Oil is welcoming a new addition to its family.

The brand, best known for its stretch mark and scar treatment oil, is looking to help those with dry skin with its new Dry Skin Gel, an intensive gel-to-oil moisturizer specifically formulated for dry skin that contains many skin-soothing emollients and humectants found in its original oil, the company said.

Featuring a texture that instantly absorbs and locks in moisture to effectively treat dry skin, the Dry Skin Gel also aims to treat other dry symptoms like redness, flaking, irritation and itching.

“Traditional dry skin products are made with water, about 80% water. Water gets repelled by the skin. So when you put on a cream, you often get this cold sensation. People think creams are cold, but the cream is at the same temperature as everything in the room. It’s just that the water in the cream evaporates on contact with your skin because it’s being repelled and creates a cooling sensation,” Bio-Oil owners, brothers and research directors Justin and David Letschert said. “So all the water in the cream is inactive. It’s not helping to solve your dry skin problem. So we said, let’s get rid of the water. And what do we replace it with? Oil, obviously, because oil locks in moisture.”

Bio-Oil’s Dry Skin Gel is available in three sizes — 6.7 oz. that retails for $19.99, 3.4 oz. for $11.99 and 1.7 oz. for $6.99 — at mass market retailers, drug stores and online distributors beginning October.
