  • Newly created independent Ahold company names Roger Wheeler president

    NEW YORK — Retail Business Services, an independent company that provides support services to Ahold USA and Delhaize America local brands, appointed Roger Wheeler as its president.

    Wheeler has more than 20 years in retail operations, including a number of roles with Stop & Shop and Ahold USA, including stints as senior vice president of supply chain and third party management, Oracle program leader and VP of meat and seafood.

  • Superior Court of Quebec rules in favor of Jean Coutu Group on franchise agreements

    VARENNES, Quebec — The Superior Court of Quebec ruled in favor of the Jean Coutu Group late December, the Canadian retailer announced Tuesday, ruling that the company's franchise agreements with pharmacist owners are not in violation of section 49 of the Code of Ethics of pharmacists of Quebec which prohibits pharmacists from sharing profits from the sale of medications or from their fees with a nonpharmacist.

    Before you got into the association management business, you worked in government and even ran for Congress in 1980. What led you to politics, and what are one or two of the most important things that experience taught you?

    I was 27 years old when I ran for Congress, so I was in my formative years. I learned that I could compete with anyone, despite my blue-collar background. However, I realized I don’t have all of the answers, and probably never will.

  • Possible repeal of Affordable Care Act takes first step

    WASHNGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Senate voted 51-48 in favor of beginning a debate on a budget resolution that could overhaul of repeal the Affordable Care Act.

    This vote means the Senate will begin 50 hours of debate on a budget measure that would repeal much of the ACA, also known as Obamacare. This step is the first in a two-step process, which could direct congressional committees to craft a budget reconciliation bill, which would include language to repeal much of the ACA.

  • Bristol-Myers Squibb CEO Caforio to add chairman to his title

    NEW YORK — Bristol-Myers Squibb announced CEO Giovanni Caforio, M.D., will add chairman to his title. Caforio will assume the role on May 2, succeeding Lamberto Andreotti, who will retire as chairman.

    Caforio has been chief executive officer of Bristol-Myers Squibb since May 2015 and has been serving on the company’s Board of Directors since June 2014.

    WASHINGTON, D.C. — Automation could threaten the jobs of “lower-paid, lower-skilled and less-educated” workers, leading to greater U.S. income inequality, according to “Artificial Intelligence, Automation and the Economy,” a new report issued by the Executive Office of the President.

  • Walgreens Boots Alliance and Rite Aid agree to sell 865 Rite Aid stores to Fred’s Pharmacy

    DEERFIELD, Ill. & CAMP HILL, Pa. — Walgreens Boots Alliance and Rite Aid have entered into an agreement to sell 865 Rite Aid stores and certain assets related to store operations to Fred’s for $950 million.

    The transaction is subject to Federal Trade Commission approval, the approval and completion of the pending acquisition of Rite Aid by Walgreens Boots Alliance, and other customary closing conditions.
