The ongoing pandemic has impacted the beauty industry in various ways.

Pampering and giving one's skin some major TLC has been an ongoing theme this past year, and it seems to continue to head in that direction, according to a survey from CeraVe.

An online survey, conducted by the personal care brand with Harris Poll, questioned approximately 2,005 adults in the United States and found that 65% said they wished they had more control over their skin.

The survey also reported that 62% of participants found that the pandemic has given them more skin issues than before. The top concerns being dryness and itchiness, both of which can be affected by colder temperatures, but also with disrupted ceramide levels in the skin, the company said.

“Flareups of skin concerns are often a result of a compromised skin barrier, so winter skin care regimens should focus on protecting and supplementing the barrier with products formulated with ceramides, a key component that makes up 50% of skin's barrier,” board-certified dermatologist Elyse Love said. “I recommend upgrading moisturizers from lotions to rich creams in the winter months, like CeraVe Moisturizing Cream, to counteract the effects of winter and replenish ceramides, which restore the skin's natural protective barrier.”

Ceramides, which are lipids that hold the skin barrier together in order to keep moisture in and irritants out, also can be affected by hot showers and dry indoor heat. As a way to aid in ensuring ceramides are not disrupted, the brand’s board-certified dermatologist suggested curating a winter skin care regimen.

“As a therapeutic skin care brand, CeraVe understands that the needs of the skin vary by person based on a variety of factors, such as age, gender, race and even geographic location,” Jaclyn Marrone, vice president of marketing at CeraVe, said. “We take pride in working with dermatologists to develop safe, effective formulas so our consumers can choose between a variety of therapeutic solutions to meet their unique skin needs, all made up of three essential ceramides and carefully selected ingredients to address their individual concerns, from acne to itchiness and more.”

Additionally, the report found that 67% of respondents said they planned to recommit to a skin care regimen within the new year, the company said.

As a way to help with this initiative, CeraVe is sharing tips on the importance of establishing a skin care routine tailored to the season on its Facebook and Instagram accounts.
