  • Costco names new chairman

    ISSAQUAH, Wash. — Costco has named one of its longtime directors chairman of its board of directors. The company on Thursday announced the board’s board election of Hamilton “Tony” James to the position.

    James is Blackstone Group president and COO, as well as a member of Blackstone Group Management’s board of directors. He is a member of Blackstone Management Committee and sits on each of the firm’s investment committees. James has been a director of Costco since August 1988, becoming its lead independent director in 2005.

  • Costco’s sales grow 8.8% in July

    ISSAQUAH, Wash. — Costco Wholesale Corp. turned in a winning performance in July, fueled by strong traffic trends.

    The company reported that its net sales in July rose 8.8% to $9.41 billion, compared with $8.65 billion during the similar period last year. Total company same-store sales rose 6.2%, with a 6.0% increase in the United States. Excluding the impacts from changes in gasoline prices and foreign exchange, total same-store sales rose 5.3%, and 5.5% in the U.S.

  • Costco chairman, founder Brotman passes away

    ISSAQUAH, Wash. — A retail legend has passed.
     
    The co-founder and chairman of Costco Wholesale Club, Jeff Brotman, 74, died Tuesday morning. He died in his sleep at his home and the cause of his death wasn’t immediately known.  
     
  • Costco’s same-store sales rise in June

    ISSAQUAH, Wash. — The nation's largest wholesale club operator reported strong sales for the month of June, both domestically and globally.
     
    Costco posted net sales of $12.17 billion for the five weeks ended July 2, 2017, up 5% from $11.33 billion during the year-ago period. Total same-store sales were up 6%.
     
    In the U.S., same-store sales rose 6.5% in June. International same-store sales increased 6.2%. Canadian same-store sales rose 3.2%. 
     
  • Industry mourns loss of former Costco exec Charles Burnett

    Charles “Charlie” Burnett, a longtime Costco pharmacy executive, passed away early in the morning on June 1, the National Association of Chain Drug Stores announced Friday. Burnett is being remembered for his work as a pharmacy pioneer who helped build and grow Costco’s pharmacy business. 

    During his lifetime, Burnett became the only person to win both of NACDS’ highest honors — the Sheldon W. Fantle Lifetime Achievement Award and the Harold W. Pratt Award.
