Fred’s will be selling its EntrustRx specialty pharmacy to a CVS Health subsidiary for $40 million, plus the value of the specialty pharmacy’s inventory.

Same-store prescription volume growth in the company’s retail/long-term care segment grew 8.5% year-over-year, driving a 5.6% increase in segment revenues, which totaled $20.4 billion for the quarter.

Ahead of Saturday’s National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day, CVS Health said that its disposal efforts had collected almost 350,000 pounds of unwanted medication since their inception.

CVS Pharmacy said that it would be transferring files from stores in Grain Valley, Mo., and Kearney, Mo., with the remaining locations set to remain operating in the same locations with the same staff.

The 28 medication disposal units in Ohio CVS Pharmacy locations join the 33 that CVS Health had donated to police departments in the Buckeye State.

In the past year, the company said 1,500 veterans have been treated at the 25 Phoenix-area MinuteClinic locations participating in its joint initiative between the Phoenix Veterans Affairs Healthcare System and TriWest Healthcare Alliance.

The company has added drug disposal kiosks in 19 West Virginia CVS Pharmacy locations, supplementing the five it has donated to local police departments in the state.
