    ATLANTA — Hair accessories brand Goody is making it easy to create sexy summer waves with its new Summer Waves foam rollers available this month at Walgreens.

    The rollers have a contoured shape and new design to create natural-looking waves, the company stated. The pack of 15 large foam rollers features built-in clips so there's no additional pins or clips required.

  • Scent, moisturizing qualities drive consumers to buy certain soap products

    CHICAGO — When shopping for soap, bath and shower products, scent and moisturizing capabilities are cited most often as influencing purchase decisions, according to a recent Mintel survey.

    According to the survey, 38% of respondents who have purchased soap said their decision is based mainly on scent, while 35% said they prefer shower products with extra moisturizers.

  • AstraZeneca's vandetanib receives approval from FDA

    SILVER SPRING, Md. — The Food and Drug Administration has approved a drug made by AstraZeneca for treating a rare form of thyroid cancer, the agency said.

    The FDA announced the approval of the daily pill vandetanib for late-stage medullary thyroid cancer in patients whose disease is growing and causing symptoms but who are ineligible for surgery.

    Medullary thyroid cancer involves specific cells found in the thyroid gland and can occur spontaneously or be part of a genetic disease. There currently are no FDA-approved treatments for this cancer.

  • Elite's generic Adipex-P enters market

    NORTHVALE, N.J. — Elite Pharmaceuticals has begun shipping an appetite suppressant for reducing weight in obese patients, the company said Thursday.

    The drug maker announced the initial shipment of phentermine hydrochloride tablets in the 37.5-mg strength. The drug is a generic version of Teva’s Adipex-P.

    Adipex-P and generic versions had sales of about $40 million in 2010, according to IMS Health.

    The shipment was made under a collaborative agreement with precision dose and its subsidiary, TAGI Pharma.

  • New flavors join Crystal Light Pure's roster

    NEW YORK — Crystal Light Pure has added three new fruity flavors to its line.

    The brand now includes tropical blend, mixed berry and lemonade varieties, which offer the flavorful benefits of Crystal Light, such as no artificial sweeteners, flavors or preservatives, the company said. Each 8-oz. serving of Crystal Light Pure boasts 15 calories and 4 g of sugar per serving and is sweetened with Truvia, an all-natural, no-calorie sweetener.

    With these additions, the Crystal Light Pure line now offers five flavors, including grape and strawberry kiwi.

  • Wrigley sinks teeth into calcium-infused gum

    NEW YORK — Wrigley is packing a new type of gum in its "down under" market.

    The company launched in Australia and New Zealand new Extra Professional Calcium, a sugar-free line of gum that contains microgranules that are designed to whiten teeth and feature added calcium. The company said that chewing Extra gum products stimulated saliva, which contains more bicarbonate, calcium and phosphate to help remineralize tooth enamel.

  • Pfizer, Zacharon enter collaboration

    SAN DIEGO — Pfizer is partnering with San Diego biotech company Zacharon Pharmaceuticals to develop treatments for rare genetic disorders Zacharon said Thursday.

    Under the collaboration, which could garner Zacharon up to $210 million, the companies will discover and develop pharmaceutical drugs for treating lysosomal storage disorders, a class of illnesses that includes Fabry disease, Gaucher disease, Pompe disease and Tay-Sachs disease.
