    DEERFIELD, Ill.  — The day some analysts thought would never come has arrived. On Friday, Jan. 27, the deadline expires for the pending acquisition of Rite Aid by Walgreens Boots Alliance for $9 per share in cash (representing a $17.2 billion deal including the acquired net debt).

    NEW YORK  — With the deadline for the deal set to expire Friday, Jan. 27, Walgreens Boots Alliance CEO Stefano Pessina told shareholders attending the Walgreens Boots Alliance annual meeting Thursday morning that the board of directors for both Walgreens and Rite Aid were in "active" discussions toward getting the deal approved even as the Federal Trade Commission continues to deliberate over the proposed retail pharmacy merger.

  • Federal judge blocks Aetna, Humana merger, citing competition concerns

    WASHINGTON — The proposed $37 billion merger between Aetna and Humana hit a roadblock Monday, when U.S. District Court Judge John Bates issued his ruling in a lawsuit between the companies and the federal government. The Dept. of Justice sued on behalf of 264 counties in 21 states where it said a merger would limit competition unlawfully in the Medicare Advantage markets and 17 counties in three states where it said public exchange competition would be limited.

  • Affordable Care Act absent from new White House website

    WASHINGTON, D.C. — The new Donald Trump White House website, www.whitehouse.gov, went live Friday, but one thing of importance to the drug store industry was not listed as a top priority: the Affordable Care Act.

    The official Trump website lists six top issues: “America First Energy Plan, America First Foreign Policy, Bringing Back Jobs and Growth, Making our Military Strong Again, Standing Up For Our Law Enforcement Community and Trade Deals Working For All Americans.”

  • Americans split on Affordable Care Act

    WASHINGTON D.C. — The percentage of Americans who approve of the Affordable Care Act reached its highest level of 48%, according to a new CBS News poll.

    The poll, conducted by telephone Jan. 13-17 among a random sample of 1,257 adults, also found that 22% of those surveyed think the ACA, otherwise known as Obamacare, should be repealed entirely, the lowest percentage since the news organization first asked the question in 2013.

  • Poll: Two-thirds of Michigan voters oppose losing access to PSE cold medicine

    WASHINGTON  — The Consumer Healthcare Products Association on Thursday released the results of a recent poll of registered voters in Michigan showing they are strongly opposed to legislation that would require a prescription for over-the-counter cold and allergy medicines containing pseudoephedrine.
