    WASHINGTON, D.C. — Cardinal Health Chairman and CEO George Barrett was named chairman of the Healthcare Leadership Council, an alliance of companies and organizations representing all sectors of American healthcare. He is serving a two-year term in this role.

  • Influenza picking up south of New England, CDC reports

    ATLANTA  — Influenza activity is picking up across the East Coast even as it remains at high levels in central U.S., the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Friday.

    Nationwide during the week ended Jan. 28, 3.9% of patient visits reported through the U.S. Outpatient Influenza-like Illness Surveillance Network (ILINet) were due to influenza-like illness. This percentage is above the national baseline of 2.2%.

    ILI is defined as fever (temperature of 100°F [37.8°C] or greater) and cough and/or sore throat.

    WASHINGTON — The foundation on which the Council for Responsible Nutrition is basing its Congressional outreach this year is based on three elements: Incorporating dietary supplementation into the bedrock of any federal policy that promotes health and wellness; highlighting the many ways the dietary supplement industry is seeking to augment government oversight through self-regulation initiatives; and enjoining Congressional leaders to participate in an ongoing dialogue with VMS industry.

  • PhRMA names new leads on state advocacy, strategic alliances

    WASHINGTON — The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America has announced leadership changes to some of its advocacy efforts as longtime SVP advocacy Jeff Bond is set to retire. The organization named SVP Scott LaGanga as head of PhRMA state advocacy, assuming Bond’s responsibilities. Shannon Graham has been named SVP and will lead PhRMA’s advocacy and strategic alliances program. 
     

  • Pew Research: Vast majority of Americans support vaccination mandates

    WASHINGTON — Most Americans support requiring the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine for public school children in order to protect public health, the Pew Research Center reported Thursday. Responding a survey prior to the election, Americans believe there are high preventive health benefits of such vaccines, and low risk of side effects, and they consider the benefits of the vaccine to outweigh the risks.

  • New final FDA guidance begins to clear path for more biosimilars

    As 2016 drew to a close, the Food and Drug Administration gave a gift of sorts to drug makers looking to submit to the agency an application for approval of a biosimilar drug when it issued its final guidance, “Clinical Pharmacology Data to Support a Demonstration of Biosimilarity to a Reference Product.”
