  • PepsiCo, GNC join forces for Phenom

    PURCHASE, N.Y., and PITTSBURGH One of the world's largest food and beverage businesses is teaming up with a specialty retailer of nutritional products to develop and sell fortified coconut water products.

    PepsiCo and GNC said its Phenom brand will launch during second quarter 2011 and exclusively will be sold at GNC stores and GNC.com. The companies added that the line will address the growing demands of health-conscious consumers for natural products that help them with their daily regimen.

     

  • Amazon.com to buy parent company of Diapers.com, Soap.com

    SEATTLE Amazon.com announced that it has reached an agreement to acquire Quidsi, which operates Diapers.com, an online baby care specialty site, and Soap.com, an online site for everyday essentials.

     

    Jeff Bezos, founder and CEO of Amazon.com, said, “This acquisition brings together two companies who are committed to providing great prices and fast delivery to parents, making one of the chores of being a parent a little easier and less expensive.”

    BALA CYNWYD, Pa. A zero-calorie enhanced water brand will be available at 55 Big Y Foods in Massachusetts and Connecticut this month.

    Skinny Water currently is available at Safeway stores nationwide. The addition of Big Y increased the total retail store count to 7,079 stores nationwide, up from approximately 4,200 retail outlets at year's end 2009.

    WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. A daily dose of beet juice may increase blood flow to the brain and keep the mind sharp, possibly helping to stave off dementia later in life, according to a new study.

    Researchers at Wake Forest University found that beet juice is rich in nitrate, which the body converts into nitrite, a substance that helps open up blood vessels and improve blood flow. Nitrates also occur at high levels in celery, cabbage, spinach and some kinds of lettuce.
