  • PLMA consumer survey: Host of factors feeds consumer 'buy' decision

    NEW YORK — A recent consumer survey debunked the two long-assumed scenarios surrounding the moment a shopper actually makes a shopping decision — before they've entered the store as part of a planned purchase or at the shelf on an impulse.

    For years, the retailing industry has debated between those who argue a shopper’s mind is mostly made up before they even enter the store and those who assert the real decision what to buy comes down to a final few seconds at the shelf. In fact it is neither, according to a recent survey of U.S. consumers.

  • Giant Eagle intros NuVal shelf tool to help identify better nutrition

    PITTSBURGH — Giant Eagle this past week introduced the NuVal nutritional scoring system throughout locations in Columbus, Ohio, and Frederick, Md.

    Intended to help customers make quick, informed food choices, the NuVal nutritional scoring system gives more than 20,000 food and beverages a score ranging from 1 to 100 — the higher the score, the better the nutrition. Scores are posted right on the shelf tag, along with nutritional attributes like “gluten free” and “good source of fiber.”

  • Inventure Foods to offer Nathan's Famous snacks

    PHOENIX — Inventure Foods has teamed up with Nathan's Famous to offer ready-to-eat snacks that will be available at retailers this fall.

    Inventure Foods said that its lineup will include Nathan's crunchy crinkle fries, which will be available in cheddar cheese, chili cheese and honey mustard flavors and packaged in 2- to 3.5-oz. bags for a suggested retail price to $1.99 to $2.19. Additionally, Nathan's crinkle cut potato chips will be available in a single-serve, 1.25-oz. size that will retail from $.99 to $1.29.

  • Green Giant launches new Valley Fresh Steamers vegetables with pasta

    MINNEAPOLIS — Green Giant has expanded its Valley Fresh Steamers lineup to include vegetables with pasta and sauce.

    New steam-in-the-bag Green Giant Valley Fresh Steamers portfolio now includes macaroni and cheese with broccoli and pasta and vegetables with alfredo sauce. Each bag, which contains one to two servings, provides family-friendly vegetable sides to dinner in less than 7 minutes, Green Giant said.

  • Bartell's introduces 'next generation' store concept

    SEATTLE — Bartell Drugs has unveiled its latest store concept, the chain said Friday.

    Bartell's, the country's oldest drug chain, announced the opening of what the company called its "next generation" store format, a remodel of an existing store in Seattle's Roosevelt neighborhood. The company developed the new concept in conjunction with Hartmann Group, a consumer consulting firm based in Bellevue, Wash.

  • Jones Soda celebrates breast cancer awareness with limited-edition flavor

    SEATTLE — Jones Soda has introduced a limited-edition beverage in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

    New breast cancer awareness soda features various pink-themed images, including a black-and-white photo of world snowboarding champion Lindsey Jacobellis, who recently was tapped to serve as part of the Jones Soda Athletic Team. A portion of the sales from the soda will be donated to the nonprofit organization, Boarding for Breast Cancer (B4BC).

  • Noah's Sparkling Spring Water adds new flavors, updates packaging

    CHICAGO — Noah's Sparkling Spring Water has debuted new flavors and packaging for its beverages.

    The company said in addition to its original flavor, the sparkling spring water now is available in lime, blueberry pomegranate and peach mango. What's more, the drinks also will make their debut in 12-oz. Rexam Sleek cans. Previously, Noah's Sparkling Spring Water only was packaged in glass bottles.

    Noah's Sparkling Spring Waters are currently available at select retail locations in California, Nevada, Idaho and Utah with plans to drive expansion across the country.
