  • GSK no longer will seek approval for Avodart

    LONDON — GlaxoSmithKline withdrew all regulatory approval applications for a drug designed to cut men's risk of developing prostate cancer.

    The drug maker announced it no longer would pursue global approval for Avodart (dutasteride) and would work with regulatory agencies to remove the indication from the product’s license.

    PITTSBURGH — Though more than 7-in-10 drugs dispensed in the United States today are generics, and the Food and Drug Administration holds generics to the same standards as branded drugs, misgivings among the general public still exist, fed by the occasional media report of patients experiencing bad side effects after taking certain generic drugs.

    ATLANTA — Goody, a maker of hair accessories and styling tools, is relaunching its StayPut collection — originally designed to give athletic women hair accessories with superior hold — under the name Slide-Proof, to coincide with the launch of its new hair accessories for use in any occasion.

    The new Slide-Proof accessories are infused with Slide-Proof technology to provide a secure hold so accessories will not roll, slide or fall out of hair. The collection includes everything from colorful stretchy elastics and headbands to classic claw clips.

  • Detour turns to beverages

    CARSON CITY, Nev. — Forward Foods, a nutrition bar company, is making a foray into the beverage market.

    The company is boosting its Detour brand by the Detour lean muscle high-protein shake to its existing line of Detour protein bars. The shake, the company said, is fortified with 26 vitamins and minerals, provides 1,000 mg of omega-3 and will be available in milk chocolate and vanilla bean flavors.

    The Detour lean muscle high-protein shakes will be available next month in health and fitness retailers and GNC stores nationwide.
