  • Report: Nestle to expand coffee business

    VEVEY, Switzerland — Nestle is looking to boost its coffee business.

    The company, which recently reported that its soluble coffee was a key growth driver during 2010 across all regions, said the combined performances of single-serve coffee brands Nespresso and Nescafé Dolce Gusto strengthened its leadership in the dynamic portioned coffee market. Nestle added that its Nespresso brand reached $3.24 billion in annual sales for the first time.

  • Wonder gets 'smart' with wheat bread

    IRVING, Texas — Following the introduction of its Smartwhite bread, Wonder Bread is introducing a new 100% whole wheat bread to its lineup.

    New Wonder Smartwheat provides 22 g of whole grain and the calcium of 8 oz. of milk in two slices, and is a good source of nine vitamins and minerals, the company said. Additionally, Wonder Smartwheat contains no high fructose corn syrup and is lower in sodium as part of the brand's recent commitment to the National Sodium Reduction Initiative.

  • Frank's RedHot spices up offerings with heat-and-serve line

    PARSIPPANY, N.J. — Frank's RedHot is cooking up something spicy in the frozen food aisle.

    Through a collaboration with Completely Fresh Foods, the hot sauce brand announced it was introducing fully cooked chicken wings, shrimp and appetizers that will be sold in grocery, mass and club stores nationwide. Frank's RedHot heat-and-serve offerings will include buffalo wings, buffalo shrimp, chicken fries and chicken poppers.

    MADISON, Wis. — As the world prepares to "spring forward," Rayovac is offering a host of engaging activities, fun giveaways and tips for sprucing up fire safety plans.

    In preparation for daylight saving time, the battery brand is hosting a Twitter event and a Facebook promotion designed to raise awareness about replacing batteries in smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, the company said.

  • American Greetings keeps HQ in Ohio

    BROOKLYN, Ohio — American Greetings won't be moving its headquarters from northeast Ohio, the company's CEO said Monday.

    The greeting cards maker said it would continue to review sites in northeast Ohio, including its current headquarters in Brooklyn, according to CEO Zev Weiss.

    Last year, American Greetings began reviewing site options for its 2,000-employee corporate headquarters. Last November, the company narrowed its scope and began considering locations in northeast Ohio and greater Chicago.

    NORTHFIELD, Ill. — The active gum category has a new functional addition. Kraft Foods recently introduced Stride Spark, a gum that contains vitamins B6 and B12, two essential nutrients known for helping to release energy in the body.

    Manufacturers have been boosting new gum flavors with vitamins and supplements in an effort to help consumers meet their daily nutritional requirements and keep the category exciting. The strategy has worked — gum has seen steady growth over the past few years, outpacing many other confection segments.

  • Drug channel needs to amp up its CE potential

    The drug store channel isn’t maximizing its potential in the consumer electronics category. According to research by TWICE and the Stevenson Co., CE sales at Walgreens, Rite Aid and CVS amounted to $111 billion last year, less than 1% of the chains’ combined revenue. At Walmart, electronics comprise about 7% of sales. TWICE’s research also revealed that CE sales at all three drug chains were down last year.
