  • Food Should Taste Good becomes part of General Mills

    MINNEAPOLIS — General Mills has acquired natural snacks company Food Should Taste Good.

    The company, General Mills said, will become part of the consumables giant's natural and organic products business, Small Planet Foods.

    Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but General Mills noted Food Should Taste Good's founder Pete Lescoe will continue with the business as creative director.

    CHICAGO — Among consumers who eat ethnic food at home, two-thirds of them said authenticity is the utmost important ingredient, according to new Mintel research.

    In addition to an authentic flavor, ethnic foodies also emphasized that ethnic food should have the following features: all-natural (49%), premium/gourmet or artisanal (49%) and reduced fat (48%) positional claims, which round out the top characteristics that matter in the purchase decision.

  • Blue Bunny boosts ice cream portfolio with new products

    LE MARS, Iowa — Blue Bunny is bringing new ice cream innovations to freezer aisles nationwide.

    Blue Bunny has introduced Sweet Freedom treats, which tout 150 calories or less, 8 g of fat or less, and 30 g of carbs or less. The line includes 10 flavors of ice cream, as well as snack-size ice cream bars and ice cream cones.

    Additionally, Blue Bunny has teamed up with Cadbury chocolate to create new ice cream bars, which will be available in Caramello, double chocolate, vanilla chocolate and chocolate almond flavors.

  • Quaker Oatmeal Squares debuts honey nut flavor

    CHICAGO — Quaker Oats is expanding its Quaker Oatmeal Squares cereal to include a new flavor.

    The brand said the new honey nut flavor joins the roster of brown sugar, cinnamon and golden maple varieties.

    As part of the launch, Quaker Oats is promoting the new flavor on the Quaker Oatmeal Squares Facebook page and encourages users to "like" the page to receive a free sample of Quaker Oatmeal Squares' newest flavor and can help up to 10 friends earn a free sample of the brown sugar variety.

    AUSTIN, Minn. — Hormel Foods has introduced a spokescharacter for its Spam brand.

    Sir Can-A-Lot, a 2.5-in. tall knight "provides an engaging presence that highlights the playful and down-to-earth personality that makes the Spam brand both unique and timeless," Spam product manager Nicole Behne said. "The campaign features him ridding not only mealtimes of boredom, but also helping consumers 'break the monotony.'"
