  • Lego, Warner Bros. Consumer Products to launch construction sets based on 'Lord of the Rings,' 'The Hobbit'

    BILLUND, Denmark, and BURBANK, Calif. — A line of build-and-play construction sets based on the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy and the upcoming film "The Hobbit" is coming to retail.

    Lego and Warner Bros. Consumer Products said it will introduce the Lego The Lord of the Rings construction sets are slated for a global launch beginning in June 2012 in the United States, with Lego The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey scheduled for release later in the year.

    COSTA MESA, Calif. — Project 7 has appointed Laura Wasser as its new VP marketing.

    Prior to joining the company, Wasser worked at Hurley — a youth lifestyle brand rooted in surfing, skate, music and art — where she led all marketing strategy, development, and sales execution.

    Project 7 is a cause-related company that makes everyday consumer goods that donates funds to seven areas of need when its products are purchased. The company currently has distribution in Walmart stores.

  • Gnawin' Forever positions itself as a new kind of chew toy

    MEADVILLE, Pa. — Ainsworth Pet Nutrition has expanded its Better Than treat brands to include an interactive chew treat and toy for dogs.

    New Gnawin' Forever is an edible treat held between a virtually indestructible, refillable and reusable housing unit that encourages dogs to use their canine teeth instead of their molars, resulting in an extended chew time, the company said.

    The Gnawin' Forever ultimate interactive chew toy currently is available for $26.98 on PetFoodDirect.com, along with a two-pack of refills (sold separately) for $9.99.

  • SVP, general counsel at Coca-Cola to retire

    ATLANTA — Coca-Cola on Thursday announced that Geoffrey Kelly will be retiring from his post as SVP and general counsel.

    Kelly, who joined the company in 1970, will retire in February 2012. He has served in the role of SVP and general counsel since 2005.

    Succeeding Kelly is Bernhard Goepelt, who will take on the role of SVP general counsel and chief legal counsel, effective immediately. Kelly will remain SVP during a transition period, Coca-Cola noted.

  • Coca-Cola sets sights on sustainability with next-generation PlantBottle packaging solutions

    ATLANTA — In an effort to support its long-term commitments through sustainable practices in sourcing and packaging supply, Coca-Cola has inked partnership agreements with three biotechnology companies to commercialize the brand's PlantBottle packaging.

    Agreements were signed with Virent, Gevo and Avantium after Coca-Cola’s research and development team and technical advisory board conducted a two-year analysis of different technologies.

  • Barnie's CoffeeKitchen brings line to Fla.-based Walmart stores

    ORLANDO, Fla. — Barnie's Coffee & Tea Co. is bringing its Barnie's CoffeeKitchen line to Florida-area Walmart stores.

    The company said the lineup will include 12 of the brand's bestselling coffees. What's more, the coffee flavors are classified by mood states (i.e., comforting, intriguing or robust), rather than roast level or growing region.

    The suggested retail price is $8.78 for a 12-oz. bag.
