  • Clif Bar's Luna line takes a dip in chocolate

    BERKELEY, Calif. — Clif Bar on Wednesday introduced several new chocolate flavors across its Luna line of nutritional bars for women in time for Valentine’s Day. Luna Bar offers chocolate-dipped coconut and chocolate chunk varieties, while Luna Protein introduces mint chocolate chip and chocolate flavors.

  • MannKind receives complete response letter for Afrezza

    VALENCIA, Calif. — It seems that MannKind has experienced a setback with a drug designed to control hyperglycemia in Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes patients.

    The Food and Drug Administration on Thursday issued a complete response letter to the drug maker regarding Afrezza (insulin human [rDNA origin]) inhalation powder. The regulatory agency requested that the company conduct two clinical trials, one in patients with Type 1 diabetes and one in patients with Type 2 diabetes, with its next-generation inhaler, to assure it works as effectively as MedTone, its predecessor.

  • Under PEPFAR, Matrix gets tentative approval for generic Combivir

    PITTSBURGH — The Food and Drug Administration has given tentative approval to an antiretroviral treatment for children with HIV and AIDS under the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief program.

    Mylan announced Thursday that its subsidiary, Matrix Labs, had received the tentative approval for lamivudine and zidovudine tablets in the 30-mg/60-mg strength. The drug is a generic version of Combivir, made by ViiV Healthcare, a company specializing in HIV and AIDS created as a partnership between Pfizer and GlaxoSmithKline.

  • Strawberry Shortcake puts on the glitz in new DVD

    HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Looking to delight Strawberry Shortcake fans this Easter, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment is bringing the beloved character to DVD in a new musical.

    In its partnership with American Greetings, "Strawberry Shortcake: Puttin’ on The Glitz," tells a story of heart-to-heart makeover magic and features Strawberry Shortcake and her friends.

    The DVD arrives March 22 for a suggested retail price of $14.98.

  • Jones Soda, The Onion create co-branded sodas

    SEATTLE — Jones Soda and The Onion have teamed up to bring consumers a co-branded line of limited-edition sodas.

    The companies created a collection of six 12-oz. glass bottles — which will retail for $12.99 — that each boasts a black-and-white newsprint-inspired label with a signature Onion headline and accompanying image. The collection includes Jones' popular green apple, root beer and strawberry-lime flavors.

  • R.W. Knudsen Family sweetens beverages with Truvia

    WAYZATA, Minn. — R.W. Knudsen Family has rolled out new drinks that cut back on calories but not on flavor.

    The beverage maker announced this week that its new light juices line, available in blueberry, cranberry and pomegranate varieties, is sweetened with zero-calorie sweetener Truvia. The drinks, R.W. Knudsen Family said, have 45% less calories than other superfruit blends.

  • Hershey's takes chocolate to next level

    HERSHEY, Pa. — Hershey is offering fans a new way to enjoy its iconic chocolate candies.

    New Hershey's Drops, available in milk chocolate and cookies 'n creme flavors, are delicious bite-sized drops without the candy shell. Chocolate lovers now can enjoy on-the-go snacking without the mess, the company said.

    Hershey's Drops will be sold nationwide in 8-oz. resealable, stand-up pouches. Also available are milk chocolate Hershey's Drops in king-size 2.1-oz. packs.
